Cassandra Gist Psychologist Brisbane

Cassandra Gist, BPsych (Hons), MPsych, MAPS.

From an early ages, I loved reading books about Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung.

This motivated me to study psychology, and I have since completed a Bachelor of Psychology and a Masters of Health Psychology at The University of Queensland. Since completing my studies in psychology, I have worked in a variety of settings while raising my family.

One of these was working along side the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities at the Institute of Urban Indigenous Health. In this environment, I assisted this community with chronic diseases including diabetes, musculoskeletal issues, mental health, respiratory disease, hypertension, cholesterol issues and chronic pain to name a few. Treatment included exercise, diet changes and psychoeducation around their illnesses, with an empathetic approach using Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT).

Children, Adolescents and Adults

I have provided assessment and therapy for clients including 2 to 5 year olds, primary school children, adolescents and adults.

While working with Queensland Health at Caboolture Hospital I assessed children and adolescents for:

  • Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD);
  • Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD);
  • Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD);
  • Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD);
  • learning difficulties;
  • anxiety; and
  • depressive disorders.

I worked with children and their families to diagnose and treat their individual issues in a holistic manner.  I found this experience to be both gratifying and humbling to spend time getting to know each child and their parents individually and guiding them to integrate the recommendations into the home and schooling environments.

Additionally, I have been engaged in academic research in the areas of health psychology and families. I have presented at conferences and published articles in these interest areas across Australia.

Specifically, I investigated food choice of parents when one or many of their children have autism, including how parents cope with the difficult behaviours that are often apparent with their children.  I also examined the way parents of children with food allergies select food for their families, including the distress they face when managing this issue.

Personally and professionally, I am very warm and empathetic and I enjoy working with clients in a holistic manner to understand their entire world that often comes with mental health challenges.  I look forward to meeting you and providing some guidance during your life journey.
